An Open Letter to Michael Moore: Make a Movie about the American Mainstream Media

Mr. Moore,

This letter is in direct response to your recent open letter to CNN and their subsequent response.

As an American, I (obviously) watch quite a bit of television. As a political junkie, I am constantly seeking out information on politics, government and society. Unfortunately, this is not a particularly safe combination in this country today.

I pride myself on keeping abreast of local, national and global news. I've been an (over)active consumer of broadcast news for the majority of my adult life. This may not be an extraordinary amount of time, but even over just the past five years I can say with confidence that we have seen a gross deterioration in the quality and neutrality of the information with which we are presented by the media.

You know as well as anyone that American mainstream media is owned by just a handful enormous (and generally evil) mega-corporation media conglomerates. Folks like Rupert Murdoch that have lots of money and lots of opinions leverage their media influence to ultimately influence American public opinion to better serve their own interests. And, for the most part, it works. But some of us are sick of it.

You (and many others) have called out the media's blind flag-waiving (edit: "waiving" was initially a typo, but it's a nice Freudian slip so I'm leaving it in) during the lead up to the Iraq war. You have plainly stated that the media is responsible for (most of) the American public support for the invasion, and gone so far as to say that the blame for deaths of our soldiers can be placed on the American media.

As is often the case with such bold claims, important questions are being raised. Do we need media ownership regulation reform? Is ownership regulation itself the problem? Should the media be held accountable for their actions/reporting? Can they be? By whom?

Fortunately, today we have the internet. I no longer have to sit in front of the television and take what I am told as fact. Regular people like myself can share opinions, research facts and (perhaps most importantly) organize. Websites like Digg, Reddit and even your own allow popular opinion to be shared with a (relatively) large audience. Unfortunately, the internet affords such organization and dissemination a fairly limited reach in the grand scheme of things. And that is why I am writing you.

Make a movie about the media. Extend our reach on the issue. Bring it to light. Name names and cite sources. Make a scene. Start the discussion.

There are people, myself included, that are moderately skeptical of your work. This is not surprising to you, I'm sure, and I actually think it lends credibility to this request. I think your movies are important. As controversial, biased and contested as your films may be, they often start a discussion.

You have done it with corporate corruption, gun violence, terrorism and health care. Do it for something you're obviously passionate about and that is just as dangerous, if not more: the gross misinformation and manipulation of public opinion by the mainstream American media.

Help us escape from this infotainment garbage. America deserves better.

Thank you.

P.S. - I also think it is important to note that there are television news shows that provide the desperately needed vehicle for the voice of the public. There are those few programs that take an introspective look at the American media system. For some of us, there is nothing more satisfying that watching Jon Stewart respond to a mainstream news report by looking straight into the camera and screaming, "Seriously, what the fuck!?" It's exactly what we're all thinking.

P.P.S - Mr. Moore, if by whatever means you actually happen to end up reading this and have thoughts to share... blogyoulikeahurricane@gmail.com

a) It's been done, see the great film Manufacturing Consent

b) Why can't you make your own damn movie? Michael Moore didn't have any experience with film when he did Roger & Me.

@ Neil

The point is that if Moore did it the film would get attention and maybe get people talking, at the very least just because he's controversial.

I was always skeptical of Moore's work too, all the way up to Fahrenheit 9/11. But in retrospect, he was dead on in his assumptions in 9/11, so he had a little more credibility in my eyes going into Sicko.

I didn't really see the controversy with this movie. Of course Moore plays tongue-in-cheek with the American government, but that's always been his way, but he largely plays it bi-partisan, and seems to feel the same way about politicians that I do: republican or democrat, no difference, they're all corrupt, and they're all in the pocket of some big business and/or special interest.

I hope this film at least lights a fire under some people to start getting us talking about change.

Get Bill Moyers in on it; he'd make it kick ass seventeen ways from Sunday. I don't know if their styles would mesh but, if they could find a way, /that/ would be a movie for the ages!

He should just create a movie version of 'An Assault on Reason' instead.

Mainstream media? Screw that - make a movie about how screwed up American politics (and America) is by religion. "MY God is the only TRUE God..." Um... no.

Edit:
In response to Neil's point: Noam Chomsky is one of the most intelligent and articulate voices in the intellectual community, and his Manufacturing Consent changed my life when I saw it a few years back. I would encourage everyone to see it.

However, I have found that there's somewhat of a barrier to entry to Chomsky, being as thorough (read: longwinded) as he can be. In this way, I think Moore is very capable of adding a lot of insight and context to the discussion, and I would look forward to seeing what he has to say.

Anyone interested in this topic should find a copy of PBS' Frontline episode called "The Merchants of Cool".
It's about how the 5 media conglomerates control not just what you see, but what is cool and hip, which therefore generates even more viewership of their media outlets. It's pretty insidious, actually. It's the private sector version of Manufacturing Consent.

Continuing the CNN Michael Moore feud, CNN takes it's time in providing a point by point response to Moore's criticisms. After having read it, here are my thoughts ...

CNN essentially did a hit piece, right before interviewing Moore, and are trying to justify it with technicalities. They still claim that Moore "fudged facts" even though they don't point to even one made up number or false fact.

CNN ought to be the ones highlighting the problems with health care and Iraq. It shouldn't be forced unto a Hollywood documentary producer. Cripes, and when somebody reports on the news they ignored, then they go after the guy who did the reporting. I am left bewildered. As if Moore is somehow bigger news than the issues he tries to highlight.

I understand Moore's style is argumentative, I get that, but it doesn't really bother me. I don't watch a nature documentary and expect it to build both a case for conservation and extermination. In my opinion, CNN shouldn't hold some guy from Hollywood at a higher level of accountability than their own news outlet.

In summary, it seems that CNN works hard at reporting when covering their own ass. If only they were this thorough the other 364 days of the year. If only they would ever do this "fact checking" thing to, you know, politicians and people with real power instead of film makers, maybe, just maybe, more people would watch.

Have you seen Bowling for Columbine? A good chunk of it is devoted to how the media tries to make Americans afraid of everything.

How about all of you guys start harassing your representatives in the senate and the House. This is how democracy works after all. Politicians are very sensitive about what the voters are saying, regardless of who are filling their pockets. And with ellection coming relatively soon, a lot can be achieved...Write pamphlets to your neighbourhood, go to your community centre, church (after all, Jesus was one of the first in recorded history to fight for social issues) and use the cermon from the mountain rather than the rigth wing old testament as an argument and further your goals. I can guaranty that things arer going to change. But never forget respect for the other. Nowbody sees and feels the world the way you do it...

Yes, I would love to see Moore do two hours on the Media.

But, how about 4.5 hours of an excellent insight into today's media?

It is called Front Line on PBS.

I can't recommend it enough. (And you can watch it for free online.)

The problem with Michael is you need permission to use video clips of their content, and no media organization in their right mind would give Moore or his Production company rights to use the footage in way he would want to, to make suc a documantary.

This is just garbage by Gupta and CYA by CNN. CNN should be focusing its reporting on the issues of the movie, rather than the 'fudged' quibbling over Moore's numbers, and a system which Gupta has a vested interest in. THAT IS MOORE'S F**KING POINT.

START REPORTING the numbers, ANY F**KING numbers, like the discrepancy in health costs 251 in cuba, to 6000 in America. REPORT THAT, please, AS A NEWS ITEM. Pick your own f**king numbers, just report them.

Patrick said...

@sysrpl - CNN, in their response, showed where Moore compared numbers from some reports to numbers from other reports - if not falsifying data, it IS fudging facts - different reports use different resources

It's a real shame people aren't aware that the media is under more or less total control, primarily in the US but to an extent in allied countries. Much of big media is owned by defense corporations, or those related. I strongly suggest reading "Into the Buzzsaw - Leading Journalists Expose the Myth of a Free Press" by Kristina Borjesson. Also, the CIA has had media control for some time - this was proven by a document declassified a few years ago, then reclassified later by Bush. However a copy was saved, visible here (it's genuine): http://www.disclosureproject.org/PDF-Documents/CIAMemo.pdf
Check page 6, which says "PAO [Public Affairs Office] now has relationships with reporters from every major wire service, newspaper, news weekly, and television network in the nation. This has helped us turn some intelligence failure stories into intelligence success stories, and it has contributed to the accuracy of countless others. In many instances, we have persuaded reporters to postpone, change, hold, or even scrap stories that could have adversely affected national security interests or jeopardized sources and methods."

Are you kidding me? Honest? Michael Moore? Please Kiddies, i say kiddies because only a child would be posting things like this and the following repLIES. Moore is a HACK ( at best) . EDITING children . Do you know what EDITING is? He makes his "FILMS" look the way HE WANTS THEM TO LOOK, not the TRUTH. He was and is a LOSER do you know that in his "Roger and Me film" he actually meet with Roger Smith several times but never said that...Then he got a show in BRAVO and ran a Tree for President - now wasn't that hilarious? Comic Genius! He was cancelled from NBC and BRAVO - Cancelled from Bravo - what's that say? Down on his luck he found his magic formula - want to make money in America in 2003? - TRASH and LIE about George Bush and you got it made.$100,000.00! Why is he mad at CNN? Because if he was asked HARD questions on FOX he'd CRY abuse as usual ( You know that RIGHT-WING FOX) but to get a tough question about his CLAP CRAP -LIE FILLED movie on CNN - Well you know that's just not FAIR, Is it? they should be praising him and calling him GOD! That would be like Tim Russert asking Hillary Clinton an actual non-scripted softball question. Do a "film" on the media? The leanings of this "open letter" are so FUNNY and obvious...

Go watch "Orwell Rolls in His Grave" - an excellent movie on the media that deserves to be more widely seen.

I agree also that more tackles controversial topics, and many people attack him for the methods that he uses. If you take a step back and look at who he is up against (the government), you will see that he is simply using the same scare tactics that the government uses with its propaganda and media influence.

I would love to see Moore do this, in fact, if he needs an extra person on his crew for this one...I am all in. I have so many problems with the media it's not funny.

You can watch all the other documentaries that people have posted, or read books like "affluenza" (which also was made into a documentary). But you really have to go back and look at the beginning of entertainment and why it was initially started, and why it worked so well. It was started because workers back in the early 1900's were getting depressed from going to work everyday and then just coming home to dinner and a bed. There wasn't much to occupy ourselves with back then. When vaudeville came about, people were excited to be entertained and preoccupied. This brought about the essentials for what we see today, an over abundance of entertainment.

I work for an Independant news TV studio. We rent studio space to the larger broadcast stations like MSNBC, FOX, CNBC, CourtTV, C-SPAN, and international clients. I can honestly tell you some stories that would piss you off. Like FOX feeding questions to one guest and not the other, this happens many times in favor of the conservative. And how about the countless times O'Reilly has cut peoples mic's. You should hear what his control room producer has to say about that.

Hire me Michael Moore, I can be your sidekick on this one.

I think America needs this to happen.

Why would Moore reply to this, or listen to you at all, when you write that his movies "may be biased"?

I mean, WTF? Are you saying his films are "biased" or aren't you? If you are accusing Moore of misrepresenting the facts, then don't you think you have any obligation to back up your accusation?

And if you *don't* think Moore lies or presents distortions of the truth, why would you repeat the same "This Man May Be a Liar" type of insulting remark that CNN tried to pull on Moore when he showed up on their network? You don't certainly don't present any more evidence for your smear against Moore than they did.

I hope you'll edit your letter or write an explanation of your remark that Moore "may" suffer from "bais." And memo to the author: next time when you're making a request to someone, It's a good idea not to include gratuitous personal insults.

Insulting Moore without at least explaining your remarks puts you one step away from the Limbaugh-listening Republican in this comments thread who accused Moore secretly hanging out with Roger Smith while filming _Roger and Me_. Moore, like anyone, deserves better than that.

I think you're making an unfair criticism of journalism as a whole. You assume that because most major media is owned by a handful of corporate interests that all journalists working somewhere down the food chain are not to be trusted. That's like assuming that every American, because they are American, obey George Bush because he is president. Most journalists are pissed off that there isn't more variety in media ownership; but they do their jobs honestly and professionally.

By not being a journalist, Michael Moore freely twists and misrepresents facts and figures to back his arguments, conveniently tossing out facts that don't fit his storyline. Journalists have no such interest; they are there to report the facts objectively. CNN called Michael Moore out for his misrepresentations and they corrected the mistakes they made. That is something Michael Moore has yet to do.

CNN's "rebuttal" was pathetic.

Point 1: They seem to be agreeing that nothing was hidden by Moore, but then don't bother to explain what the hell they were getting at in the first place? What were they trying to say with that point? "But hold on, Moore is entirely correct"?

Spin, pure spin ... the context was that Moore was fudging something. Now they are saying that Moore is just over-reacting as the whole issue didn't even exist.

Point 2: Moore's movie, created in 2006, used reports from 2006, and went with the most current information available at the time ... CNN, in 2007 was able to use a report released in 2007.

Even then though they still got their facts wrong.

CNN believes it's numbers are fairer? Fine, more recent stats, are probably more accurate, so CNN's stats, which ignore any possibility that health care spending may have gone up, are the ones we should go with.

But what do we consider "fudging" here? Is using forecasts that are likely pretty accurate considered fudging? Or is ignoring them?

Point 3: Again, CNN criticizes Sicko for not using data that didn't exist when the movie was made.

Sure, the US now has a slightly higher life expectancy than Cuba (infant mortality rate is still worst though, but CNN would never accuse Moore of "fudging facts" for not including that 2007 stat in his 2006 created movie) congratulations CNN, you've discovered a new fact checking style ... I can't wait for the new CNN series "debunking 1960's documentaries that failed to use 2007 statistics".

Point 4: "The United States ranks highest in patient satisfaction." Again, CNN takes out all the context of why they brought up this fact (to show Moore was "fudging" the facts) and then go on to say that it looks like there was no disagreement.

Why then did Gupta even bring this fact up if it were a point of agreement? Where is the "fudging" factor that is suppose to be here if you now say that there is no disagreement?

What damn point is it again that you were making?

Point 5: "We believe our example of so-called "elective" procedures such as hip replacement and cataract surgery is accurate and is helpful information."

Yeah? Sure, it's useful information, but once again CNN removes all context from the statement. Why was the statement mentioned? Was it to provide new useful information, or to show more "Fudging"?

Obviously, the purpose was to "expose fudging" of the information, but it does so by ignoring the context behind the information Moore was providing (waiting times for life threatening procedures) and trying to sneak in stats on "elective" procedures as though the two were equivalent, and that Moore was somehow trying to hide something.

Point 6: The "health care is free" rebuttal ... CNN, how stupid do you really think we are? Jerks!

Point 7: Yes, no health care system provides all the coverage everyone could want ... Moore possibly didn't use enough "truisms" in his movie. He never mentioned that water is wet either.

Point 8: Ahh, finally, the point. CNN claims Moore "fudged the facts", but the whole rebuttal by CNN is all about showing that CNN either agreed with Moore, or that CNN found data that wasn't available to Moore at the time the movie was created, but still more or less substantiates the spirit, if not the exact, precise, and absolutely p-to-the-moment current numbers of what Moore has claimed.

Point 9: Again, the only argument CNN has is "dated" statistics. CNN has to learn that 2006 and 2007 are different years, and that 2006 comes before 2007, and that time actually means something.

Point 10:: "Again, Moore seems to be creating controversy where there is none. Moore agrees with Dr. Gupta's reporting that Medicare solvency is only assured until 2019."

Take out the context and Spin, spin, spin. The point isn't that Medicare is only solvent until 2019, the point is the reasons why this is the case. CNN is once again "fudging" to show "fudging", or saying that when they brought up this "fact" that it had no context and was never meant to show that Moore was "fudging" something.

Point 11: ""His only affiliation is with Vanderbilt University. We checked it, Michael. We checked his conflict of interest. We do ask those questions."

So his ONLY affiliation is with Vanderbilt, which he left, but he's not affiliated with Aventis, Blue Cross or EBM because he left, and isn't affiliated with Deloitte because he hasn't left????

What the hell are you saying here? This kind of crazy logic makes me hesitate to ask about you assertion that Keckley has no "political or ideological agenda" when it is quite obvious that he does:

http://www.newsmeat.com/fec/bystate_detail.php?st=TN&last=keckley&first=Paul

So Gupta/CNN: Define the term "fudging the facts". Does it actually mean anything? While you're at it, look up "fact checking" as well ... apparently another term CNN doesn't fully comprehend.

Another documentary is `OUTFOXED' (though admitedly on the worst of US news...)

But here's a thought for those of you dissatisfied my US media coverage: turn that TV off (except for the Daily Show and HBO Bill Mayer) and R-E-A-D A B-o-o-k or Newspapers !

Of course, the President could start leading by example (the little goat isn't quite the kind of book I'm thinking about).

Try: The NY Times, The Herald Tribune, Utne Reader ... you don't lack choice for the whole range of political spectrum !
Bookwise: Confessions of an Economic Hitman, Nickeled-And-Dimed, heck even the Encyclopedia Brittanica book of the year (4$ if you're willing to get last year's electronic version) will give you astonoshing stats about the richest country on Earth...
For instance: The US has the HIGHEST rate of unwanted teenage pregnancy among developped countries, one of the lowest life expectancies, the highest rate of abortion, homicides, crime, male suicide (Thank you NRA !), the highest rate of inmates, of illiteracy, of poverty, homelessness, of people without access to medical care; It ranks `only' #3 when it comes to executing people, way beyond... China and Iran (but ahead of Saudi-Arabia !). But cheer-up, it refuses to sign the int'l convention for children rights (which prevents applying capital punishment to minors), the Kyoto agreement (US consumes 1/3 of the world energy i.e. a fraction of Europe, Japan etc for no clear gain in terms of quality of life, unless suburbia and strip-malls are a major plus)...and I guess G. W's right to life support stops when your state changes from featus to actual human being, unless you're in a permanent vegetative state: highest infant mortality, infanticide (gotto do something about all those unwanted babies teenagers can't abort)...
Iraki children... actually children around the globe who lose limb or life each year because as I am writing, the US still has to stop planting landmines which will kill 30 years from now...

Better yet, if you're NOT among the unlucky ones, get a passport and go... anywhere abroad: whether it's Greece, France, Thailand or Indonesia, most countries have 1 or more local paper in English often quite interesting. You even get to see the `locals' who may be living on as little as 1$ per day... for real... or - on the opposite end of the spectrum - as well if not better than you for a fraction of the cost !
Or actually if you are among the unhealthy ones, go to Europe, where you'll pay 20 euros for a visit to the doc (that's WITHOUT insurance, not a copay which would be 1 euro), and fill your prescriptions: a course of wide-spectrum antibiotic which goes for 100$ will cost you only 1/5... again without insurance ... so it doesn't take very long to make up for the price of that plane ticket...

If you own cable TV, you have access to foreign News more often than not subtitled, and contrary to US news they actually inform you about the ROW ! Even NPR will show the French `Journal' (and NO it is NOT all about France!), the Italian or the German one...

So really the info IS AVAILABLE. People either don't know it or don't want to know it.
And as much as I'd be interested in seeing Michael Moore's views of the media, why pin it all on him ???
For a view of America thru the eyes of a Brit, I am biased towards Bill Bryson' `Notes from a big country', and his other books for that matter. Not only can you get a `fresh look', but I suspect you'll also laugh a lot ! Seriously ...

Moore is a story teller and does a good job of raising awareness of a certain social issue, while presenting his chosen topic in an entertaining way.

CNN is a network which is interested in presenting a topic in an abridged way to increase viewership (so that ad revenues will go up).

The US health care system is a major tragedy. A country such as the US should have health coverage for everyone with either private or public insurance.

Given the importance of this issue, a bipartisan effort is needed to solve this problem, especially for the 47 million that do not have insurance.

It is very likely that the system can be vastly simplified with public insurance (government) that is SAME for everybody regardless of age, race, culture, gender, national origin and employment status.

Much outsourcing can also be used to take out costs of higher salaries from the sytem.

A person can go to Thailand or India or Phillipines or Taiwan or Singapore and get surgery and still pay out less than the US costs. This suggests that the system in the US is overly bloated in costs and someone is making excessive profits at the expense of peoples' health.

I think Michael Moore is building credibility before he tackles some of the real problems we face in this world.

"Zeitgeist was created as a not for profit expression to inspire people to start looking at the world from a more critical perspective and to understand that very often things are not what the population at large think they are. It's important to point out that there is a tendency to simply disbelieve things that are counter to our understanding, without the necessary research performed. My hope that people will not take what is said in the film as the truth, but find out for themselves, for truth is not told, it is realized."

Check out http://www.zeitgeistmovie.com/

Cheers

While this is an interesting idea, I think for Moore to truly explore this issue the film should be released to the Internet and totally ignore the corporate controlled movie distribution system. After all the same big players in the movie business are also owned by the same companies that own the mainstream media outlets.

Just my 2 cents
